Alaska National Guard Dedicates Kotzebue Hangar to Retired Maj. Gen. John Schaeffer, Jr.


The Alaska National Guard has dedicated the Army Guard’s aviation hangar in Kotzebue to retired Maj. Gen. John Schaeffer, Jr. The ceremony occurred on August 9, 2016. Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Alaska National Guard leadership honored Schaeffer and his family in a community-wide ceremony to celebrate his countless contributions to the DMVA, AKNG and the state of Alaska. Senator Ted Cruz Visits Fort Bliss


Check out this video of U.S. Senator (R-Texas) Ted Cruz, who joined Maj. Gen. Pat White, commanding general, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss, Col. Charles Lombardo, commander, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1AD, and other on an aerial tour of Fort Bliss, Texas in addition to observing tank gunnery tables on August 9, 2016. Sen. Cruz fired an M1A2-Abrams and spoke with Soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 2nd BCT, 1 AD, during his visit. Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade supported.

Connecticut Chapter Golf Classic


The AAAA Connecticut Chapter held their annual Golf Classic on August 11, 2016, at the Whitney Farms Golf Course in Monroe. The tournament raised money for the AAAA Scholarship Foundation. 449th TAB Celebrates Change of Command


Brig. Gen. James C. Ernst, Lt. Col. Joseph W. Bishop, Col. Jeffrey L. Copeland and Command Sgt. Maj. Derwood L. Norris sat in the seats of honor during hte change of command ceremony at the North Carolina Army National Guard’s Army Aviation Support Facility 1 in Morrisville, N.C., on August 7, 2016. Bishop previously served as the commander of 1-130th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, and then became commander of 449th Theater Aviation Brigade and Copeland has been promoted to Chief of Staff for the North Carolina Army National Guard.  These photos were originally found here.

AAAA’s North Country Chapter held a golf tournament to benefit the AAAA Scholarship Foundation on Friday, July 29, 2016. Colorado National Guard & Boy Scouts Join Forces


Check out this video of Boy Scouts and Civil Air Patrol Cadets visiting the Aviation Support Facility on Buckley Air Force Base. The Scouts and Cadets were able to check out the Army Helicopters and a fixed wing aircraft. They learned about aviation, and were even able to take a ride in a CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Blackhawk over Metro-Denver. It looks like it was a great learning experience for all.

Captain’s Team Run


Check out these photos of Soldiers, assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, completing a Captain’s Team Run on the Rugged Terrain Trail at the 7th Army Training Command’s Grafenwoehr Training Area, in Germany, on July 21, 2016. Phoenix Company Completes Historic Flight


Check out this video footage of a historic Gray Eagle flight that occurred on March 16, as Soldiers from Company F, Gunfighters, 1-1 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1 ID, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, validate a corridor of airspace that will provide better, more precise training for the “Big Red One.”

Obama Awards Medal of Honor to Vietnam War Helicopter Commander


On Monday, President Barack Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to retired Army Lt. Col. Charles Kettles, who is credited with saving the lives of 40 soldiers during the Vietnam War. While presenting the highest military award to Kettles, 86, Obama called his story “a wonderful inspiration,” adding that the takeaway from his bravery is not just “a creed for our soldiers,” and that it should be a creed for all of us.
