Members of 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, arrived in South Korea earlier this month to complete the Kiowa’s final deployment. In nine months, the unit will return to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the unit’s OH-58Ds helicopters will be replaced with more modern AH-64D Apaches. The 10th Combat Aviation Brigade held dedication ceremonies for 1st Sgt. Billy J. Siercks, Capt. Aaron Blanchard, and 1st Lt. Robert J. Hess, who all made the ultimate sacrifice, at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield, New York, on May 24, 2016. Col. Michael C. McCurry, commander, gave a speech during the ceremony. Let us take a moment to remember the epochal D-Day invasion of Normandy 72 years ago that helped the Allies to defeat Hitler. D-Day can be considered one of the world’s most consequential battles. Approximately 160,000 American, British, Canadian, and French troops took part in the invasion of northwest France, known as Operation Overlord. Over 9,000 Allied forces were killed or wounded. The Allied landing led to the liberation of France and marked the turning point in the European theater of World War 2.
