Female Chinook Pilot Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross
Flt. Lt. Laura Nicholson, a medical evacuation pilot, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. This is only the second time ever the Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded to a female pilot. Flt. Lt. Nicholson is a Major in the Army Air Corps. The citation from her actions reads: “Not fazed by the prospect of an immediate return into a situation she knew to be highly dangerous, Nicholson rallied her crew and made her way quickly into the area, successfully evading more incoming tracer fire.” Flt. The ceremony recognized over 150 U.S. Soldiers leaving for almost a yearlong deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield under the 185th Theater Aviation Brigade.
